Educational Resources Using Ocean Coring Data

Ocean sediment cores collected by IODP offer engaging visual and quantitative datasets that can be used to explain many Earth phenomena and how Earth’s systems have changed over time. Search the lessons on this page to find grade-level appropriate activities that will help your students learn specific concepts and practice scientific skills.

Support Materials for Educators

These resources provide background on the process of collecting ocean sediment cores, how to introduce ocean coring data to students, and how to locate additional datasets from IODP:

Additional data can be accessed through the JOIDES Resolution Science Operator database. Watch the webinar linked above for more information on how to find specific data you can use independently or in addition to the lessons on this page. You may also reach out for assistance by emailing Education Specialist, Lindsay Mossa at lmossa@americangeosciences.org

Lesson Development

The lessons on this page are based on activities developed by educators and scientists who worked aboard the ocean coring vessel, the JOIDES Resolution (the JR, pictured above). These lessons have been revised by AGI to connect to NGSS and to include additional supports for student learning.

The lessons on this page were made in partnership with and supported by funding from:
