Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA)
This academy, funded by ExxonMobil, leverages AGI’s extensive expertise and resources in geoscience education. It is specifically designed for K-8 teachers who are new to teaching Earth science. The TLA offers a combination of opportunities for developing geoscience content knowledge that relates to current K-8 science standards, enhancing pedagogical skills, and networking among participants. TLA Spring 2026
This spring, AGI’s TLA is operating under a train-the-trainer model designed to expand impact while strengthening local leadership.
In this format, past TLA participants now serve as TLA Leaders, hosting their own “mini-TLAs” within their states and districts. These locally led workshops allow educators to engage with sustainability-focused resources and instructional strategies while building regional networks of science leadership. AGI provides materials, structure, and ongoing support to ensure consistency and quality across all locations.
In addition to supporting TLA Leaders nationwide, AGI will host an in-person TLA workshop at our headquarters in Alexandria, VA (March 21, 2026) for a local cohort of K–8 educators. Participants in the Alexandria workshop will receive:
- A $250 stipend upon completion of the full program
- Lunch provided
- Mileage reimbursement (available on a limited basis, as the workshop is designed primarily for educators local to the Alexandria/Northern Virginia area)
Through both the TLA Leader model and the Alexandria workshop, AGI continues its commitment to equipping educators with high-quality, sustainability-centered resources that strengthen science instruction and leadership at the elementary and middle school levels.

Past TLA Participants
TLA 2024-2025
The in-person portion of the 2024 TLA took place in Denver, CO from July 7-13. This marked the second year of the new TLA model, where educators are divided into two groups (the Elementary Level TLA from July 7-10, followed by the Middle School Level TLA from July 10-13) and the location moves to a different city each year.
TLA 2023-2024
In 2023, the TLA model was revitalized from a Teacher Leadership Academy to a Teaching and Learning Academy. The TLA also returned to an in-person format taking place in Atlanta, GA from July 16-22. To better cater to the distinct needs of different age groups, the K-8 program was divided into two specialized sections: the Elementary Level TLA (from July 16-19) and the Middle School Level TLA (from July 19-22). This change allows for more tailored content and an enhanced learning experience for each group.
TLA 2020-2022
From 2020 to 2022, AGI adapted the TLA to a virtual format in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual TLA maintained its focus on enhancing geoscience content knowledge and pedagogical skills while introducing new online tools and resources to facilitate remote learning and engagement. This shift not only ensured the continuity of the TLA during a time of widespread disruption but also expanded the reach of the program, allowing more teachers to participate without the need for travel.
TLA 2009-2019
AGI has been holding the TLA for over a decade. Traditionally, the program was hosted in person at ExxonMobil’s Houston campus, providing a collaborative environment for K-12 geoscience and STEM teachers. Over the years, the TLA has evolved to include various initiatives that support K-12 geoscience education and professional development for teachers, offering resources and fostering collaboration among educators and geoscientists.
